Korede Akarakiri, a recent graduate of the Department of English at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Creative Director of Arkore Arts, has partnered with NCI Studios to launch an initiative for freshmen at the university.
Tagged “Freshlite 1.0,” the two-day photography class is designed to introduce new students to the basics of photography and help them harness their creative potential. The event will hold on January 10th and 11th, 2025, at the SUB TV Room on campus.
Participants will learn key skills, including Basics of photography, Understanding light in photography, Mobile and digital camera techniques, and Hands-on practical sessions.
The facilitators for the masterclass include Korede Akarakiri himself and Mayowa Adesuyi, Creative Director of Themavisuals.
Speaking on the motivation behind Freshlite 1.0, Korede explained, “Creativity lies untapped in many individuals. If we can help students discover and develop their creative potential early, we would be empowering them to achieve more academically, financially, and personally.”
The programme is heavily discounted for freshmen, with a 70% reduction in fees. Instead of the original ₦30,000, freshmen will pay just ₦7,500 as a commitment fee. Stalites, however, are required to pay the original fee if they wish to participate.
Enitimope Akayejo, a past participant in one of Arkore Arts’ photography classes, described the experience as life-changing. “It was one of the most transformative experiences I’ve had. Photography is more than taking pictures; it’s about mastering the vision behind them. The insights I gained far surpassed the cost of the class,” he shared.
Korede added that the goal of Freshlite 1.0 is to reach at least 50 participants before registration closes. “We want to raise a new wave of creatives at OAU, equipping them with skills that inspire creativity, financial independence, and academic growth,” he noted.
